How I Became Obsessed with the French

How I Became Obsessed with the French | modernfrenchblog.com

How did I become obsessed with the French?

The answer is quite simple. It’s a story of French boy meets girl and girl falls in love with French boy. Then, girl falls in love (somewhat obsessively) with the French culture as a whole.

But it wasn’t always like this…

No Clichés Here (aka Living in Denial)

During college I spent a semester abroad in Spain. Every week we planned a new weekend trip, and every week I silently scoffed at the group who decided to go to Paris.

For me, the girls who went to Paris were cliché girly girls. Girls who wore pink, drank champagne, and swooned for men. At that time in my life, I was more interested in wearing black, slingin’ back beers, and breaking hearts.

On Monday mornings, the ones who just got back from Paris would waltz dreamily into class. They would be all starry-eyed and satisfied from a few magical days in France. But I still couldn’t get behind the whole idea of it. The romance of the City of Lights was like cotton candy to me: Too sickly sweet to be enjoyable.

Cheese and Wine are Gateway Drugs

Fast forward a few years and I found myself sitting next to a Frenchman at a pool party. We immediately hit it off and started hanging out.

Every time we saw each other, we ate cheese and drank wine. Not just cheddar and two buck chuck, but ooey gooey cheeses and fine wines with names I couldn’t pronounce.

All the cheese and wine was so good and so tasty that I finally had to admit: The French are good at making cheese and wine.

The Full-blown French Addiction

The more I got to know about the Frenchman and his culture, the more I started to realize: The French are good at everything.

They are classier, sexier, happier, thinner, less stressed, more relaxed, and better parents. And apparently, I wasn’t the only one to come to that realization. Millions of articles and books have been written on how the subject and I eat them up like, well, cheese and wine.

My French addiction has been full-fledged since 2010, and I’ve learned quite a lot during that time. Just like everything else, the more I learn about the French the more I realize how little I know. That means there is still so much to explore!

Not to mention, my Frenchman says I’m only about 65% French and I’m striving for 100% (once an overachiever, always an overachiever).

So, join me on my quest to become more French. We’ll wine and dine, talk style and culture, and learn to live the good life along the way. Bienvenue mes amies et à bientôt!
